The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is a directive that establishes common accessibility requirements for products and services across the European Union. It aims to improve the functioning of the internal market for accessible products and services.
The EAA comes into force across all EU member states. Organizations must ensure their digital services comply by this date.
Applies to products and services sold in the European Union, regardless of where the company is headquartered.
Member states will enforce penalties that vary by country, including fines and restrictions on selling products or services.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define three levels of conformance. The EAA references WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the baseline standard.
Level A
The minimum level of conformance. Addresses the most basic web accessibility features, removing the most significant barriers for users with disabilities.
Examples:
Level AA
The target level for most organizations and the standard referenced by the EAA. Addresses the biggest and most common barriers for disabled users.
Examples:
Level AAA
The highest level of accessibility. While not required for whole sites, achieving AAA for specific content demonstrates exceptional commitment to inclusion.
Examples:
Accessibility is not just a legal requirement—it's good business and the right thing to do.
Over 87 million people in the EU have some form of disability. Accessible websites reach a larger audience and improve usability for everyone.
Avoid legal risks and penalties by meeting the accessibility requirements mandated by the European Accessibility Act and national laws.
Accessibility improvements benefit all users. Clear navigation, readable text, and logical structure improve engagement and conversion rates.
Demonstrate your commitment to inclusion and social responsibility. Accessible businesses build trust and loyalty with customers.
